Ukraine worked quickly to restore power across the country a day after Russia launched new missiles at infrastructure, taking out most of the country’s power plants in the process.
The Ukrainian power company Ukrenergo said their main focus is on restoring the power grid since Wednesday evening’s attack caused a systematic incident. As of Thursday, electricity was restored to all regions in Ukraine, but housing units were still being slowly connected to the grid.
Ukrainian armed forces on Wednesday said 70 Russian missiles were shot by Russian army crafts. Out of these, 51 missiles were shot down by the Ukrainian forces. It’s not surprising that more and more Russo-Ukrainian relations are reaching a boiling point.
At least ten people were killed in a missile attack. This also led to the temporary de-energization of all nuclear power plants, as well as most thermal and hydroelectric power plants. Many areas of the country lost electricity, along with the water supply and internet access.
Due to the dangerous conditions in the area, Ukraine shut down its nuclear power plants Wednesday morning. The head of state at Energoatom, Petro Kotin, said that the decision was precautionary and that he expects them to be turned back on by Thursday evening.
The three fully functioning nuclear power plants in Ukrainian hands – including their occupied plant near Zaporizhzhia – will help supply electricity to the country’s grid.
Just when Ukraine thought winter couldn’t get worse, Russia decided to turn its attention towards destroying the energy infrastructure of Ukraine. With the related strikes, many of the country’s citizens are now facing rolling blackouts, including the capital city of Kyiv.
Wednesday’s power blackout has caused havoc across the country. It threatens to affect Kyiv, Lviv, and the Odesa region.
Due to the air strikes, many people taking shelter in the bunker were compelled to search for night shelters in the dark due to a power outage.
In the capital city, the situation of black is also worse, and only one home out of four has electricity. Further, the water supply was restored on a district level, but still, people living on the first or second floors didn’t have a proper water supply.
Hospitals are forced to resort to generator power or even head torches worn by staff as operations continue.
The doctors put their trust in their professional training by continuing to perform operations without the lights, running on backup generators, and using headlamps as makeshift surgical lights.
Zelensky requested a meeting of the United Nations Security Council, which met with swift condemnation from Ukraine’s allies.
The European Union will soon release the ninth package of sanctions to try and blunt Moscow’s ability to wage war on Ukraine. The European Commission president said these new sanctions, which will be directed specifically at Russia, will try to dent even further its capacity to wage war on Ukraine.
