This one of Iran’s best-known actresses has been arrested for criticizing the execution of a man who was involved in nationwide protests sweeping the country since September.
Alidoosti is an increasingly prominent and outspoken feminist activist who last month published a photo of herself on Instagram without the hijab she would have typically donned to show support for the protest movement.
Her Instagram account was deleted after the distribution of such thoughts among thousands of fans.
Alidoosti, who has appeared on TV in various Israeli shows, is known for her activism in the MeToo movement in Iran’s movie industry.
Taraneh Alidoosti, who starred in one of the 2016 Oscar-winning films titled “The Salesman,” condemned the execution of Mohsen Shekari, who was killed this month.
He was reportedly sentenced for “waging war against God,” or moharebeh, for stabbing a Basij militant at a protest on September 23.
After Shekari’s execution, she said: “Your silence means supporting tyranny and tyrants,” adding that ‘every international organization who is watching this bloodshed and not taking action is a disgrace to humanity.”
Days after Shekari was hanged, a second execution took place on December 12. Majidreza Rahnavard was hanged in the northeastern city of Mashhad after he was accused of killing two paramilitary officers.
The local news agencies are saying that celebrities like Alidoosti are making false claims about the country’s decisions. People who are involved in such acts are bound to be punished by the nation.
The local rights group, Committee to Counter Violence Against Women in Iranian Cinema, said on Wednesday that it was unclear about Alidoosti being in the custody of which Iranian government department.
Many people said that Taraneh had left the country amid such protests. However, last month she confirmed that she is in the country and has no plan to leave any time soon. She has even stopped working amid the tense situations in the country.
Alidoosti writes about the rights of the Iranian people and has given various statements where she claims that she is with the families of deceased protestors. Taraneh is ready to fight for their rights and says that she will stand strong against the wrong no matter what the conditions are.
Many citizens have been arrested and sentenced to capture for unanticipated reasons. Nationwide efforts by the state’s morality police, who flagged Mahsa Amini as an ‘offender’ after she failed to wear her hijab properly, sparked protests.
Iran has been deeply shaken by the recent protests. The demonstrations have since become a canvas of grievances against the authoritarian regime.
Furthermore, there is no means to know the exact number of deaths in Iran during these protests. But the local groups claim that about 450 people have been killed since the beginning of the protests.
Iran is facing the biggest turmoil of its history, and people are also facing violence and incompetence from the authorities.
