The USA Mullet Championship of 2022 was won by an eight-year-old kid from Menomonie city in the state of Wisconsin. The kid named Emmitt Bailey won this championship by putting behind 688 candidates in the competition.
In a recent report by Buzzfeed, Emmitt Bailey said in his interview, “It’s nice that so many people compliment your hair.”
Kevin Begola, the owner of Michigan menswear business Bridge Street Exchange in Fenton, which is northwest of Detroit, created the mullet competition in 2020. Begola stated that he established the event to have fun and to honor the legendary ’80s hairdo.
Begola also told BuzzFeed News that “You’ll hear a lot of people say, ‘It’s not just a haircut, it’s a lifestyle,’ and I honestly do think that’s part of it,” further stating, “Apparently, most people with mullets can take the heat if people are giving them crap about it, but I suppose we’ve kind of shifted that corner.” He continued, “I think the ’90s country vibe is coming back hard right now.”
Other than Kids categories, the event also covers teen and adult categories, with judges and the public working together to narrow down the entrants to a pool of only 25 finalists. The winner is then chosen by online users.
Emmitt’s hair won the youngster’s division with 9,896 votes. Cayden Kershaw of Wausau, Wisconsin, won the title under the teen division. Emmitt stated that he had been growing his mullet, called “Mufasa,” for two years against the will of his mother. The mom Erin Bailey admitted she wasn’t initially on board with the plan.
In an interview with BuzzFeed News, Erin Bailey said, “From the beginning, he was fairly passionate about wanting the mullet,” she added, “I wasn’t in favor of mullets at the start, but it has now become a part of his personality and he just wants to have his own hair and personality.”
When the finalists were unveiled this week, Emmitt and his fellow young mullet fans garnered online and media attention. Emmitt, dubbed “Mullet Boy,” was featured in Wisconsin television broadcasts and even in the New York Post. Moreover, Bailey won a pair of Pit Viper sunglasses to accompany his look of the 80s along with the cash prize of $2,500. He is planning to spend this money on a go-kart.
