Complicated aortic restorations are now better for customers and operating room staff at UT Southwestern. thanks to a new imaging tool that significantly lowers exposure to radiation. The Fiber Optic RealShape (FORS) system, made by Philips, almost eliminates the need for X-rays commonly used throughout nonsurgical cardiovascular operations by using lights to view blood arteries.

Complex aortic repairs are frequently time-consuming procedures that necessitate repeated in-procedure monitoring. Carlos Timaran, M.D., Professor of Surgery and Chief of Endovascular Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center, stated that each and every time a doctor hits the X-ray button, the client and personnel, comprising assistants, nurses, scrub technicians, anesthetists, and X-ray technologists, receive exposure to radiation. “Reducing radiation exposure throughout these treatments is an essential element because the security of all of these people is critical.”

UT Southwest

Owing to its experience and a high number of difficult aortic restorations, UT Southwestern was among around twelve healthcare facilities in the U.S. and Europe selected to take part in the initial adoption of FORS, according to Dr. Timaran, a specialist in this treatment. As part of his doctor-sponsored experimental equipment clearance study, Dr. Timaran has performed upwards of 300 distensible microvascular aortic surgeries, where the aorta and its major tributaries are supported by a patient-specific transplant.

The FORS gadget employs daylight passing via hair-thin optical fibers constructed in specifically engineered tubes and cables to reveal its location and structure within the body as an alternative to traditional scanning. When this gadget is inserted into a major artery, the pressure on the fiber optics alters the route of the light. A software program recreates and depicts the complete structure of the gadget by examining how light fully recovers all along fibers. As a consequence, surgeons can patch a real-time, tri-representation of the coronary artery on ultrasound imaging images obtained prior to the operation. This gives physicians a blueprint they can view from any position to direct the operation. When employing FORS, according to Dr. Timaran, much fewer X-rays are required, lowering exposure to radiation.

In the future, he anticipates that other vascular operations will also use FORS. He said, “This technology may be utilized for any cardiovascular treatment.” “This will ultimately be the objective.”

According to U.S. News & World Report, UT Southwestern is rated No. 14 in the country for Cardiology and Heart Surgery and is a recognized leader in the field of abdominal aortic aneurysm repair.

Philips speaks with Dr. Timaran. Sam H. Phillips, Jr., M.D. Distinguished Chair in Surgery is what he now holds.
