United States lawmakers are pushing for action against the Chinese viral video application Tik-Tok as it is becoming a major concern of National Security. In the previous year, a meeting was organized, including a discussion on China and Industrial Policy. The meeting was attended by Jake Sullivan, national security advisor of President Biden, and Senator Marco Rubio, a Florida Republican, concerned about the influence of Beijing over the viral video app Tik-Tok.
Tik-Tok is a viral short video-making platform, including genres from pranks, dance, jokes, stunts, and all forms of entertainment. This application is owned and administered by the Chinese developer ByteDance and has also been criticized for the inappropriate content uploaded by many viewers worldwide. Moreover, it has become an addiction and has psychological effects on the users.
Earlier, under the leadership of former President Donald J. Trump, the application was under the impression that it was compromising the security of the United Nations by sharing information about American nationals with China. As per the latest report by The New York Times, the issue remains unresolved and has now been carry forwarded to the administration of President Biden.
The discussion between Mr. Sullivan and Mr. Rubio involves concerns about the increasing influence of the application. Senator Mark Warner, the Democratic Chairman of the Intelligence Committee, Virginia, also indicated the conversations regarding the administration of the Chinese-owned viral video application. It has been under critical discussion on how to proceed further with all other applications that belong to China.
On the other hand, the conversations on the application have created a situation of frustration between the lawmakers as the matter got stretched too far after the administration of Donald J. Trump. President Biden’s administration is way too behind on the subject of data privacy through the Tik-Tok and other Chinese applications that can share the data with the Chinese administration.
Moreover, it has been reported by many reliable sources that the data breach through these Chinese applications is real and a serious matter of concern. Taking a step ahead into the matter, Senator Marco Rubio Warner and Senator Mark Warner called for an investigation under the Federal Trade Commission into Tik-Tok and other applications. One of the regulators announced that this Chinese viral video app, Tik-Tok, should be removed from the American App stores.
According to The New York Times, a group of Republican senators has also demanded access to the application and advised not to use or download the services mentioning the matter as a security concern.
