A new pastry has arrived in town. And the internet is being overrun by it. Introducing the Suprême, a delectable croissant with a crème filling that made its debut in April at New York City’s Lafayette Grand Café & Bakery.
According to the news shared by the USA today, while some claim the flaky delight is “worth the hype,” others claim the round pastry is the delicious cronut, a croissant-donut hybrid that first appeared in 2013. Additionally, it has been reported that customers have lined up in front of the New York bakery hours before it opens in an effort to get one.
In recent months, The Suprême has gained a slew of fans both in person and on social media. The croissant has gone viral on TikTok, Instagram, and other platforms, with many people recording videos of themselves chewing through or tearing apart the tasty pastry. Customers have also reportedly queued outside the New York bakery hours before it opens in the hopes of snagging one.
On Today, Cioe also provided a breakdown of the creation, which was the result of a team he and the baker James Belisle led. Every Suprême is constructed from croissant dough that is shaped into a circle. Each pastry is filled with a specific flavor of pastry cream after baking and cooling.
According to a press release sent to USA TODAY by Lafayette Grand Café & Bakery on Thursday, “We can tell you that the process takes three days and is not at all simple. Everything is made from scratch with the highest-quality ingredients with great care.” Further added, “I don’t think we ever envisioned a line like this hours before the doors opened. It’s been a rollercoaster ride.” Cioe also states, “The phrase “worth the hype” has, in my opinion, received the highest level of acclaim. It’s also encouraging to hear customers comment that something “tastes as nice as it looks.”
The Suprêmes, according to Lafayette, “took about a month or so to get the word out,” and social media interest spiked after a TikTok video of the pastry went viral.
As of now, the flavors Lafayette has introduced include chocolate, pistachio, rose berry spritz, and others. Later on, Peaches N’ Crème, this month’s Suprême, is offered until August 31. According to Lafayette, a new taste will be unveiled on September 1.
