The tensions between North and South Korea never ease out, and there’s always something new. This time South Korea has displayed its ability by scrambling jets along the border.
The military of Kim Jong flew their drones near the heavily fortified border, which has raised alarms in their neighboring country.
In response, the South Korean military also flew some surveillance drones to get insights into any new development that may have taken place in the North.
Previously, the South Korean military informed that the drone of North flew almost one kilometer inside their territory. There were five drones that crossed the border, and this was the first time North violated the airspace agreement in the past five years.
The military of South also fired some shots from their jet just to warn their neighbor that they would not take such attempts lightly. The military has also kept fighter jets and attack helicopters on standby to shoot down any drone that enters their boundary next time.
In this conflict, the South did try to shoot down the drones using their attack helicopters and fired about 100 rounds of fire. However, it’s not clear from either side if there were any damage carried out.
Additionally, no civilian damage was reported in South Korea. The route of the drones was changed within three hours of entering the South’s territory.
The recent tensions between North and South Korea have once again brought to light the fragile and volatile nature of the Korean Peninsula.
The two Koreas have been in a state of ceasefire since the Korean War ended in 1953, but a formal peace treaty was never signed, and the two countries remain technically at war.
The border between the two Koreas, known as the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), is one of the most heavily fortified borders in the world. It’s equipped with land mines, barbed wire, and other defensive measures in place to prevent any unauthorized crossings.
The DMZ also serves as a buffer zone between the two Koreas, separating them by about 2.5 miles (4 km).
The recent incident involving North Korean drones crossing into South Korean territory has raised concerns about the potential for military conflict on the Korean Peninsula.
The South Korean military’s response was a clear indication that it was prepared to defend its territory against any potential aggression.
It is not uncommon for the two Koreas to engage in military posturing and displays of force, particularly along the DMZ.
In recent years, there have been several instances of North Korean soldiers crossing the border into the South and of South Korean soldiers firing warning shots in response.
However, the motivation of the North behind sending drones inside the South is yet unclear. However, some believe that it was to carry out a reconnaissance mission. But these are just speculations, and nothing can be cleared until it happens in real or someone admits to it.
